Meeting Gay Bauer

I spy Raman Prasad's cookbook, "Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet" on that top shelf...

My husband maddeningly easily ordered a hamburger for lunch, while we had to detail everything out. Gay prodded him to take a picture with the hamburger in it because, "That's a no-no" on the SCD. ;-) Of course, even after all of that detailed ordering the chicken and vegetables cooked in sesame oil were totally worth it!

On a recent trip to Indiana, I had the pleasure of meeting up with Gay Bauer. Have you seen her name on the SCD online groups? I would be surprised if you haven't! In fact, I remember that she was the first person to so comfortingly reply to my questions on the Long Island List Serve when I started the SCD 14 years ago, and she continues to faithfully serve the SCD community as one of its primary ambassadors.

She has been on the SCD since 1979! Over the years, she talked many times to Elaine on the phone with her questions.

Gay runs the website SCDiet.net, which contains a wealth of information about the diet, what is going on in the SCD community, how to connect with others on the diet in your area, a tribute to Elaine, and more.

Gay has a natural gift for being a resource and information person; this trait extends to other areas of her life too. While we were having lunch she had at least one call from a friend needing information!

She, my husband, and I enjoyed a delicious SCD friendly lunch at the restaurant Tulip Noire. They cater to special diets, are familiar with the SCD, and were very careful to cook our lunch exactly as we ordered it. The food was very flavorful, something I often miss when out at restaurants! I was pleasantly surprised to see Raman Prasad's cookbook, "Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet" on a shelf near our table.

Jim and I enjoyed Gay's sense of humor, warmth, and care. As we lunched, we talked a bit about Gay's history on the diet, and it was so interesting to hear her story.

What a joy to spend time with her. And we all agreed how fun it is to meet another SCDer in person! If you should have the opportunity to do so, take it. It is so nice to connect personally!

You could never meet a better person than Gay Bauer. She is so caring, loving, and shares her knowledge that is proven to work, to others. I know this because I am her daughter.
