In the summer of 2007, I was pregnant with our first son and made a trip back to California for a baby shower. While there, everyone was so happy that my pregnancy was going so well even though I had Crohn’s. (My doctor told me at the end of the pregnancy that he was surprised that I had a “picture perfect” pregnancy. I was thankful not to be surprised that the pregnancy progressed so smoothly, given how well I had done on the diet for the past six years, and how healthy the food was!)
During the trip, my parents and I went to dinner at The Crab Cooker in Newport Beach one night, and the conversation turned to how we wished more people could hear about the diet. It was sad to us that so many people were needlessly suffering while following the traditional medical route of pain, surgery, strong drugs, and loss of a healthy lifestyle. We were doing what we could to spread the word about the SCD. For the past six years since we found the diet, whenever we heard of a friend or a friend-of-a-friend who wanted to know more about my diet, we would mail out an information packet to them. Dozens of them had gone out since I had been diagnosed and found the SCD! There was definitely a high interest and need. Good news travels fast, and people were amazed at my great health. During that dinner conversation with my parents, I was struck with the idea of starting a website. It would be so much easier than sending out packets, and we could even include some delicious and beautiful recipes to help and inspire people. Plus, we could share more thorough information with them about the diet and include links to helpful websites and resources. Back home in Texas, I set to work. I had just a few months until my baby was born. . .I knew life would become very hectic from there on out, so I quickly put together what I could. After I found the domain name and launched the website, I wrote my story and started putting together descriptions of the diet and links to helpful information. My degree in college was in communications, with a public relations emphasis. I had always wished there was some way to do PR for the diet, and now here was my opportunity! Enter my Mom! She had years of graphic design experience, as well as decades of cooking experience, with an eye for beauty. She loved to create interesting and delicious meals and a hospitable atmosphere for our family, as well as the many guests we hosted over the years. She beautifully designed the website, recipe pages, and added a ton of delicious recipes with beautiful pictures. All of our combined experience was poured into the website, and suddenly we had a new hobby! It was so fun to make the diet understandable to people and provide recipes and information to make the diet easier to follow. I began to get emails from many people, desperate for help with following the diet on a daily basis. From answering those hundreds (thousands?) of emails, we expanded the website to address the most frequently asked questions. Seeing a big need for more resources, we created downloadable magazines, booklets, and cookbooks. The site expanded to include an Amazon store to buy basic SCD items. Last year, I added an email consultation service and my Mom wrote “The Flavor First Cookbook” published and mailed through Amazon. . . .And here we are! We keep getting new ideas for how to help more people discover and successfully follow the SCD. I’m excited about the upcoming possibilities! We are committed to furthering the diet so that more people get well, and hope to see the day when following the SCD will be standard medical advice to every person diagnosed with an IBD. (We are so happy with the latest research on the SCD and the strides Seattle Children’s Hospital is making in treating IBD with the SCD!) We love hearing from each of you, and look forward to what the next 10 years will bring! If there is any way we can serve you better, let us know! Enjoy your FREE July/August downloadable magazine!! ~ Erin
