When you think of shopping for the SCD, you may be surprised that there are some items that can be easily found at Walmart that can be hard to find elsewhere. I shop at Walmart less than other stores, but when I do need something that only Walmart carries (or carries for a lower price), I head on over with a list in mind of other SCD items I can easily find at Walmart...and stock up. For those who use Dannon All Natural yogurt as a starter for SCD Yogurt, I have found Walmart to always have the right version when other stores are hit and miss. Look for the whole fat version, as the low fat version contains pectin which isn't legal. The correct Dannon All Natural will contain only milk and bacterial cultures. Legal coconut milk is hard to find! I've checked out a lot of stores, finally found some legal coconut milk at Safeway, and was disappointed with the price. Recently I was happy to stumble on this Golden Star brand at Walmart that contains only coconut milk and water...and is a good price! Mmmm...I think I may make some Coconut Vanilla Ice Cream soon - have you tried it yet? My mom introduced me to Twinings Decaffeinated English Breakfast Tea a little while ago, and I'm hooked! The Lipton Decaf Black Tea that I had been drinking for the past decade or so suddenly tasted inferior...and now I drink this every day instead. Even though it's decaf, it gives me a luxurious jumpstart to the morning. I think the small difference in price is worth the decadence, and at Walmart the price difference is smaller. For quick snacks, trips, and something to keep in the car or purse, I love Mariani Trail Mix and Sesame bars! These two flavors contain all legal ingredients, and I love that they can be bought in boxed form, making them more economical than Larabars.
So next time you're near your local Walmart stop in and see what you can find! And if you don't have a Walmart nearby, check out our Corner Grocery page which contains some of these items and will take you to Amazon to buy them or to search for them there. Note: (I hesitate to recommend prepared foods to you, as each person has to decide what they are willing to try and should be careful to make sure they are legal and are tolerated well. But I really want to share what works for me, so you might be able to add something that would make the diet easier for you. I have to be honest - I don't always write or contact manufacturers to verify legality. But with so much awareness of special diets these days, I personally feel comfortable trying items that look legal. I'm very sensitive to illegals, and have been on the diet so long I can tell what is bothering me, and it doesn't cause any big problems for me...so if I notice any symptoms I just don't eat that item again. If you ever want to write to a company and verify something is legal, use this letter we've put together for you.) Your SCD Guinea Pig, ~ Erin ;-)
